Working Student Program

The Working Student Program at Fair Winds Farm offers an exciting opportunity for the qualified  individual to work with talented and athletic Sport Horses bred for all disciplines; Dressage, Eventing and Hunter/Jumper.  Students in our program are expected to learn more than just how to ride.  We believe that you will have the most success when you develop an understanding of the whole horse.  Horses are always communicating and it is our job to listen effectively.  At FWF we place an emphasize on understanding the horse from the horse's perspective.

As part of our program our students are exposed to a comprehensive course in horse health that includes collecting vital statistics, proper nutrition, worming and vaccination schedules, breeding and foaling protocols and emergency response.  We teach in depth nutritional planning.  Dietary requirements, pasture care and feeding hay are important parts of managing a healthy herd.

Our riding program is based on a Balanced Seat.  The Balanced Seat is used for combined training, dressage, fox hunting and show jumping.   We have found that in order to attain a good seat, one must become part of the horses motion.  We start by teaching our students on a lunge line, on a surcingle.  Once the student has become strong enough to ride with your hands on your hip at the walk, trot and canter the next step is to do the same in a saddle with no reins or stirrups.  Once you have a nice balanced seat with out holding on we will reintroduce the reins and stirrups back to you.  We found that this works wonders with our students and makes it easier for everyone to learn how to become one with the horses motion.

At FWF we have lots of young horses in training or that are ready to be started under saddle.

We are looking for the individual who is ready to maximize their knowledge.

I appreciate how Fair Winds Farm expects its students to be responsible, knowledgeable caretakers so that everyone can contribute positively to the health and welfare of each horse on the farm. Anyone with ambition and dedication would find this farm an ideal place to learn the art and science of horsemanship.

Chris doesn't just love horses, she knows and understands them, and she wants to pass that knowledge on. Along with hands-on work that includes basic first aid and administering vaccinations, she's taught me the benefit of simply observing the horses in the fields as they interact with each other.

Betty has been a great teacher and coach who has given me the confidence to trust myself and the horses I've ridden. She's pushed me when I needed it, but she's been patient when I needed to slow down.

It's an incredible privilege to work with the amazing horses who live at this beautiful farm. I came to Fair Winds Farm as an adult beginner who wanted to learn to ride, but I've learned and experienced so much more.
